Christmas Day
Imelda
and Sorcha arrived back at the cottage around 1.00am, after attending
Christmas Mass at Castlecoote church. Beverley had retired
shortly before. After they had gone to bed I did what was
expected of fathers on Christmas Eve and I then went to bed. I
awoke around 8.00am and let the open fire in our lounge and the kitchen
stove. I then went out to feed the animals.
It was a frosty
morning and the sparkle of frost on the ground added atmosphere to the
start of Christmas day. The rabbits got fed, the chickens were
let out of the shed and given scraps left over from the day before,
the goats were let out of their pen and staked out on a grassy
bank and the horses were given a tub of their favourite oat mixture.

Afterwards I returned to the house. My mother had walked over from her
cottage and found a Christmas stocking waiting for her on the kitchen
table. I returned to our bedroom and Imelda woke up Sorcha, where
upon we opened our Christmas stockings.
