The nearest village, named Castlecoote, is exactly one
mile east of the farm. Historically, it has its origins from Castlecoote
Castle and Castlecoote House (click on the first picture for further information).
Presently, it offers a friendly pub - that serves a great Guinness,
a General Stores, that is open from from 7 am to 11 pm and offers food
and drinks, fishing, shooting and horse riding equipment, basic DIY, a
petrol station and the services of a post office. What more would
anyone want! Outside the stores, there is a picnic area, with benches
and children's swings, next to the fast flowing River Suck.
About two miles north we have
the pretty village of Athleague, spoilt only by the smell of a nearby abattoir.
Athleague has the usual shops and pubs, plus an old water mill and
weir. Throughout this area the famous Suck Valley walk runs alongside
and bisects the River Suck.
The nearest town is Roscommon (4
miles away). A quaint town
that is rapidly becoming modernised even in the short time we have lived
here. It still has the remains
of a castle, the usual modern shops and some "oldie worldly" ones, a cattle
market that still operates in the centre of town, every friday and an old
goal (prison), which has been modernised into shops and restaurants. A
spot still marks the place, in the goal, where many criminals were hanged.
