Biography of Imelda (Melly) Floyd
Imelda was born on 17th August 1960 and was the second eldest of three children (Joseph & Jacinta), to John Joe and Annie Coriam. She was brought up on a farm, in Keelogues, Galway and life revolved around the farm and its livestock, until she "mutinied" with regard to her cow herding duties, around thirteen. Holidays are limited when you live on a farm and she remembers with affection the occasional holiday in Salthill, near Galway and the camping holiday in Wales with her Aunt Teresa and cousins.

Imelda enjoyed every kind of sport and has literally dozens of medals and certificates in the following: Athletics, Basketball, Camogie and Football. Her greatest achievement was when she came third in the All Ireland Schools Long Jump Championship in 1978 and raced in the final of the 440 yards (unfortunately not making the first three places). Based on her skill and enjoyment, she enrolled at Thomond College of Education, Limerick, to become a Secondary School Teacher, specialising in English and P.E.

In 1983 she passed her Bachelor of Arts degree and started to look for work as a Secondary School teacher. During this time Ireland had high unemployment and after eighteen months with just a few short periods as a supply teacher, she decided to further her job opportunities by emigrating to England. She initially worked at her Aunt Teresa's Nursing Home, but soon got a job as Youth and Community Leader in Barnet, London, where she managed a large team of Youth Club workers for five years. During this time she obtained a Youth and Community Certificate, a Counselling Certificate and a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate.
