On Saturday 21 October, I woke up with a severe pain in my right hand side. I thought
that I had just pulled a muscle during the night
and took a couple of pain relief tablets. The
pain subsided and I took it easy watching TV
during the afternoon. The pain returned
late afternoon and despite a further four pain
relief tablets over the next few hours the pain
continued to increase. Around 8.00pm I knew something was seriously wrong
as the pain was immense and I was hardly able
to walk. Imelda drove me to the hospital.
Initially,
they thought I had a liver complaint, this was
followed by a diagnosis of a blot clot in my
right lung, however a scan on Tuesday confirmed
that it was pneumonia. We are covered by
VHI, a private health scheme, so I enjoyed a private room with ensuite, television
and a lovely view of the Roscommon countryside.
I had booked to go to the U.K. on Friday
to attended Laura's wedding, so to make sure
I got out early I had to pretend that the pain
had eased off. On Thursday afternoon I
was released and driven home by Nancy (my mother's
friend) where I quickly took some pain relief
tablets. The pain eventually subsided the
following Wednesday.
