Greece 2008 - Part 3

The next morning we left and had an enjoyable sail.  However, the wind changed direction and was coming dead ahead and so we started the engine.  A short while later it died.  I thought that we had run out of diesel, so we called IBA who provide a boating service, equivalent to the AA.  However, when they arrived it was discovered that it wasn't lack of diesel, but a problem with the engine, so we were towed the last mile to Nidri.  Afterwards we discovered that it would be cheaper to buy a new engine rather than repair the 25 year old engine.  Particularly, as the required parts were no longer available.  A quick search found a nearly new engine (used only around 100 hours), for sale in Nidri. The alternative was to pay twice as much and wait around a month for one to be delivered from UK.  Three days later we had our new engine installed and enjoyed the extra power it gave us.

Derek and I then used the remaining few days to enjoy the delights of Nidri.  One morning was spent cycling to the Waterfalls and enjoying a swim in the Waterfalls pool.  This was followed by a cool drink at the Waterfalls bar.  One evening we observed a forest fire, on the mountainside infront of the boat.  This was quickly put out by planes dropping water onto it.  We also enjoyed the beach, swimming and (Derek) the beach bar.  He was such a regular customer that he received an honourary bar tee-shirt.

Finally, it came to the changeover day.  Derek and I caught the coach to Athens, where we had a meal near the Acropolis and then headed to the airport, where we said our goodbyes and half an hour later I greeted Imelda, Sorcha and Caitlin (Sorcha's friend). Their adventures are in Greece - Part 2.
