In March I saw a Leisure 17,
named Hi Spiritz, being advertised. This
is a small, twin bilge sailing boat that can
accomodate four people. It came with a trailer, a
4hp outboard engine and all fittings and equipment, so it was ready
to sail once the mast has been set up. I decided to buy it, as our
boat Melissa is presently being renovated and
is likely to be out of commission for several years. This would enable
me to continue sailing while Melissa is out
of bounds and also gives me the opportunity to teach Sorcha how to sail, providing further father and daughter
bonding. Melly already has the monopoly
on mother and daughter shopping!
The boat is going to be moored at Inner Lakes Marina on nearby Lough Ree. Lough Ree is a 30 mile by 10 mile
lake where the river Shannon enters from the
north and eventually exits by the south. It has about a dozen islands of various sizes. The biggest Island is approximately three miles by half
a mile. The lake is also surrounded by pubs,
which should suit Derek!
In early June we took the boat to the marina and set up the mast,
rigging and sails. In early July
Sorcha and I started sailing, although I think Sorcha
enjoyed the picnics on board, more than the sailing!
